14th &15th OCTOBER 2023 - PRESTIGE 4'S

A beautiful sunny morning with a gentle breeze blowing across the green greeted 64 bowlers as they commenced the first game of 5 games of 15 ends 2bowl fours on Saturday 14th October.

After 2 rounds in the morning, the players had a break for lunch, meanwhile the leader-board was updated. At this stage of the competition there were only a sprinkling of games with a margin greater than 10 shots. An extra end was required in a few games to determine the winning team, close games were the order of the day.

The final round for Saturday was played in what can only be described as a sunny afternoon with occasional blustery winds. Testing conditions for bowling!

Sunday morning commenced with a delicious BBQ fundraiser breakfast with all proceeds raised donated to the Bungwahl primary school.

Once again close results, great bowling and all very competitive games and more draws happening across the green.

At the conclusion of the bowls and lunch the leader-board was updated which now showed the winners and runners up as follows:

1st place with 5 wins & 37 margin  S. Reed, G. Rashleigh, S. Locke /sub G Chapman, R. Turnbull - Team from Buladelah

In summary a very successful two days of bowls played in a very competitive but friendly manner.

A big thankyou to all the bowlers who took part and made the tournament the success it was.

2023 - FOURS CHAMPIONS

Our club played the Club 4’s over the weekend of 19th & 20th August. After the quarter finals and semi-final were completed the final was set to be played by the teams of Mark Stalling, Norm Harvey, Doug Whitton and Aub Judge against Mick Ansell, Jason Lawrence, John Smart and Paul Wheatley. Playing conditions were perfect with sunshine and a gentle breeze greeting the bowlers at 1.00pm.After 4 ends Micks team were leading however Marks team started to fight back and took the lead and continued building with pressure through the back end of the game eventually taking out the contest 25 : 12.Congratulations to the team of Mark Stalling on your fine win.

2023 - TRIPLES CHAMPIONS

Sunday 23rd July 9am saw four teams play two games of triples to determine the two teams who would qualify to play in the afternoon final.

In near perfect conditions the semi-final winners were the teams of L Keene, T Tremain, & J Sparkes and C Lewis, C Fitzgerald & R Squire.

The stage was set, lunch was had and off they went at 1pm. Twenty five ends later we would have a result.

After five ends Laurie Keene’s team were holding a 7 to 3 shot lead. However, as so happens in bowls a team will get stuck on a number no matter how hard they try to progress. By the twelfth end Col Lewis’ team came roaring back and were leading 14 to 7. They consolidated their position to 18 to 10 after the seventeenth end. A mini resurgence by Laurie Keene’s team brought the score to 18 to 15. However, the team of Col Lewis, Corey Fitzgerald and Rodger Squire pulled away eventually winning 24 to 15.

Thanks to both teams for a most absorbing game of bowls.

JULY 2023

MENS GALA DAY

Under overcast skies our club's first Gala Day of the new  bowls season was held with 48 players from across the region competing in the 1 day tournament. The action kicked off at 09:00am with the day consisting of two  (2) games of 4's and two (2) games of pairs, each with 12 ends played.

Through the course of the day teams battled each other with some inspiring bowls being played. Due to such great play, the leader board changed consistently throughout the morning and 9into the afternoon. The quality of the bowls on display was fantastic and was a credit t0 all the bowlers.

However there could only be one (1) team of winners on the day and they were the team made up of Noel James, Daniel Jessop, Stave Swan and Steve Harris who was the skip (Picture L to R)

A big thank you to all the team that took part in our Gala Day: Buladelah, Forster, Pacific Palms, Sporties and Tuncurry Beach, you all made our Gala Day a truly memorable event.

2023 MAJOR SINGLES

Saturday 13th May saw the long awaited final of the Men’s Major Singles take place. Beautiful sunshine and a gentle breeze making its way across the green greeted our two finalists Mark Stalling and John Kell. After 3 ends Mark started to build up a handy lead however John was having none of that, so that by the end of the 10th end scores were locked at 9 all. From that point on however Mark started to apply more pressure and kept building the head with some beautiful bowling. John fought valiantly but Mark eventually won the day 31 to 12.Congratulations to Mark Stalling on a very inspiring display of bowls. Commiserations to John Kell, who by the way is only in his first year of bowls! Thank you both for a most entertaining game of bowls.

MARK STALLING (Right)-  2023 Major Singles Winner

JOHN KELL (Left) -  2023 Major Singles Runner Up

Zone 11 NSW Rookie Champ

On the 10th & 11th of  December 2022, Zone 11 held there portion of NSW Rookies Championship which is for those players who have only been playing lawn for a short period of time. We were fortunate enough to have two (2) from our club attend, Jason Lawrence and John Kell. Both very capable bowlers and were looking forward to pitting themselves against other rookies in the Zone.

Both played extremely well over the two (2) day event with Jason and John playing each other in one of the round games.

Jason who only lost one game over the two (2) days (which was the game between Jason and John Kell) was the eventual winner and will now head to Raymond Terrace Bowling Club on Sunday 5th of February for the playoffs. We wish Jason all the best and hopefully he can continue his winning ways at the playoffs in February.

Tradies v Bowlers December 2022

With covid behind us we were able to recommence our regular Tradies v Bowlers day which took place on Sunday 11th December.

We were blessed with some glorious weather and had 42 players from the Bowling and Tradies fraternity to face off against one another to see who be crowned the champions for 2022. The competition was quite fierce throughout the day with a lot of great sledging between the two groups.  Once the dust settled it was the bowlers who were able to come out o0f top and grab bragging rights until next years event.

The day itself was not just about the bowling but was also to help raise money for local Kids Sports and The Westpac Helicopter. Deb the raffle queen made sure everyone had tickets for the raffles and we ran a couple of spiders with a gold coin donation per turn. All up the day raised $1,020 dollars and was dived up by:

$255 to Westpac Helicopter

$255 to Pacific Palms Netball

$255 to Pacific Palms Soccer

$255 to Nippers

A massive thank you to Laurie Keene who did a stellar job in getting this event up and running again and for ensuring that everyone had a cracker day.

CLUB PAIRS - DECMBER 2022

Saturday 3rd December saw our club pairs kick off for two days of hard fought competition.

At close of play Saturday all but four teams were left to advance to the semi-finals to be held Sunday.

The sides of Peter Harris and Brad Fraser were up against J. Sparke and N. Harvey whilst in the other semi-final John Higman and Laurie Keene were up against T. Tremaine and C. Lewis.

The two semi-finals once again generated some wonderful bowling however only the two winning teams could progress to the Sunday afternoon final these being Peter Harris, Brad Fraser and John Higman, Laurie Keene.

So the final was set and we can say it did not disappoint. Both teams were neck and neck from the first end to the twelfth end with Harris/Fraser holding a three shot lead. However the next end produced a seven shot haul resulting in Harris/Fraser ahead 19-9.Then as so happens in bowls the next five ends produced ten wonderful scoring shots for Higman/Keene-what a fightback, what great bowling with the score 19-19 on end 18! .The last three ends produced a great contest however for Higman/Keene it was not to be, the final result 25-19 in favour of P. Harris B. Fraser.

The standard of bowls played was incredible and the fightback amazing. At the conclusion of the game all the spectators gave a rousing ovation to the players for a game they had the privilege to watch.

Congratulations to Peter Harris and Brad Fraser on a fantastic result and commiserations to John Higman and Laurie Keene on a tremendous effort. What a game!

The weekend of the 26th & 27th November saw our first Prestige Fours tournament to be held at our club since 2019.

Forty eight bowlers took part in the two day event which consisted of 5 games of 15 ends played with 2 bowls.

On Saturday cool overcast conditions prevailed however by mid-afternoon the sun was shining and there was a slight cooling breeze, great for the bowlers.

Players took a break at the end of the second game for lunch and at this stage the leader-board was taking shape showing one team in particular with two big wins and many other close contests, in fact of the two rounds played, only three games finished with a margin greater than 10 shots.

Sunday morning after a BBQ Bacon and Egg sandwich, the fourth round commenced in great playing conditions with high quality bowling taking place. Close results were occurring all over the green and this was the story for the fifth and final round as well.

Lunch was provided at the end of the fifth round and while this took place the final scores were tallied and the leader-board updated.

The eventual winners and runners up were as follows:

1st place with 5 wins & 58 margin  Ross Logan, Danial Jessop, Mike Cutting, Jeff Faulder

The two teams that made it to the final was the Team of Richard Dennis, Terry Tremaine and David Bass versus Col Lewis, Stewart Bills and Roger Squiers. Both teams battled hard on the finals to try and ascertain there ascendancy on the game but the team lead by Richard Dennis took home the bacon in the end winning 23 to 11.
